A Thread follows one buyer through six questions. Being named in the first answer is not being chosen: a brand can drop out later, at Objection or Trust.

Shopping inside ChatGPT has gone from experiment to infrastructure in about a year. OpenAI launched shopping research in November 2025, instant checkout with the Agentic Commerce Protocol in September 2025, and richer product discovery experiences in March 2026. OpenAI announced more than 700 million weekly users in September 2025, and a growing share of buying journeys now start, and end, inside the chat.

For brands, the question is simple: when ChatGPT recommends products, how does it choose, and how do you get chosen?

How product selection works

OpenAI's own documentation makes three things clear:

  1. Product results are selected independently by ChatGPT. They are not ads, and OpenAI says they are not influenced by payments. There is no sponsored slot to buy.
  2. Merchants can submit product feeds through chatgpt.com/merchants, giving OpenAI structured, current data: titles, descriptions, prices, availability, images, links.
  3. Instant checkout runs on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, launched with Etsy and Shopify merchants, which lets users buy without leaving the chat.

Under the hood, the retrieval story matches ChatGPT search generally: products surface from a mix of the search index (heavily influenced by Bing), merchant feeds, and pages ChatGPT's crawlers can read. Reviews, comparisons and price pages across the web shape how products are described and compared.

The six levers for brands

1. Submit your product feed. This is the most direct line into the shopping surface: structured data straight to OpenAI, refreshed as your catalog changes. If you sell physical products, do this first.

2. Keep product pages crawlable and current. OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User need to read your pages. Accurate price, stock status, shipping and returns on the page, in clean HTML. A buyer told your product is out of stock mid-conversation is a lost buyer.

3. Win the comparison layer. ChatGPT's shopping research guides buyers through comparisons and trade-offs. The "best X for Y" articles, review sites and forum threads it reads decide which products enter the conversation. If that layer does not include you, your feed alone will not save you.

4. Make reviews work for you. Assistants summarize review sentiment when buyers ask about quality and reliability. Volume and recency of reviews on the platforms ChatGPT cites are a visibility input, not just social proof.

5. Answer the objection questions on your own turf. Shopping research is built for "decisions that involve comparisons, trade-offs, or multiple constraints." Buyers will ask about downsides, durability and value. Publish the honest answers: sizing quirks, limitations, who the product is not for. That content gets cited; evasive silence gets replaced by someone else's version.

6. Be buyable where the answer sends people. The conversation ends with "which one should I buy, and where?" Instant checkout merchants have the shortest path. Everyone else needs an obvious, fast, trustworthy purchase page the assistant can link.

The measurement gap

Here is the uncomfortable part: you cannot see most of this in analytics. A buyer can research, compare, reject your brand at "what are the downsides," and buy a rival on instant checkout, and nothing touches your site. AI referral reports show the clicks you got. They say nothing about the recommendations you lost.

That is why tracking the conversation matters. Vouch runs buyer-style conversations for your category prompts in ChatGPT and the other major assistants, showing where your products get named, compared, dropped and recommended, week over week.
