How to Get Cited by ChatGPT and Other AI Assistants
By Vouch5 min read

A citation is the difference between an AI assistant mentioning you and pointing to you. When ChatGPT answers with a linked source, that source gets the credibility and, sometimes, the click.
This post is about the citation itself: how ChatGPT search finds pages, why it picks some and not others, and what makes a page worth citing. For the wider question of being mentioned and recommended in ChatGPT, read how to rank in ChatGPT search.
How ChatGPT finds sources
ChatGPT answers from two places: what the model learnt in training, and what it finds by searching the web at the time. Citations come from the second.
OpenAI's help centre describes how web search in ChatGPT works:
- ChatGPT may search automatically when a question would benefit from current information, or the user can choose Search.
- It sometimes works with other search providers. When it does, it rewrites the question into one or more targeted search queries, and may send more specific follow-up queries after reviewing the first results. The page links the privacy statements of Microsoft and Shopify as providers.
- Responses that use web search may include citations, and a Sources view lists cited and related links.
- It ranks results using several factors meant to find relevant, reliable information, and says placement is not guaranteed.
Three practical rules follow from that.
ChatGPT has to be allowed in. OpenAI says that to be eligible for search results, a site must allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl it, and its host or CDN must allow traffic from OpenAI's published search-bot IP addresses. OpenAI's crawler documentation adds that sites which opt out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot, the training crawler, is a separate setting, so you can block training and still be citable.
It searches with rewritten queries, not your keyword. A buyer's long question becomes several short, specific searches. Pages that answer one specific question clearly match those searches better than a page that touches on everything.
Search partners matter. Because ChatGPT draws on other providers' results, being properly indexed elsewhere, Microsoft Bing included, is part of being findable. Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow are free.
What makes a page citable
The patterns that research and practice agree on:
Answer-shaped content. A heading that matches the question, the direct answer under it, the detail after. Assistants quote passages, not whole pages.
Specifics. Numbers, dates, names and definitions. Adding statistics, quotations and cited sources is the clearest lever in the public research, summed up in what generative engine optimisation is.
Something original. First-party data, real comparisons, documented experience. A page that rephrases what ten others say gives the assistant no reason to cite yours.
Consistency. Facts that agree across your site and other sources are safer for an assistant to repeat.
Freshness. OpenAI's help centre tells users to check when a cited source was published or updated. Visible, honest dates help readers and the systems that choose sources.
A clean technical path. Crawlable HTML that does not depend on scripts to show its text, no blocks on the relevant bots, and accurate structured data where you use it. The free AI crawler checker tests robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User and 11 other crawlers, and checks whether your page text is in the HTML.
Citations from other people's pages
Assistants cite comparison articles, reviews, forums, directories and documentation heavily. If the "best X" articles and community threads in your category leave you out, your own well-built site carries less weight. Earning a place on those pages is citation work too. How Perplexity chooses sources shows how this plays out on an assistant built around numbered citations.
A monthly routine
- List 20 to 30 questions your buyers really ask, follow-ups included.
- Ask ChatGPT each one with search on, and note which sources it cites. That list is your target.
- Where a rival's page is cited, publish or improve the page that deserves the citation: clearer, more specific, better supported.
- Fix crawler access and indexing. Allow OAI-SearchBot, and check Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Recheck monthly. Citations rotate as sources and models change, so one check is a snapshot, not a trend.
Common questions
Does ChatGPT always cite sources? No. Answers from the model's own knowledge often have no links. Citations appear when ChatGPT searches the web, which is why being ready for search matters.
Can I pay to be cited by ChatGPT? You can buy ads, but they are not citations. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US on 9 February 2026, for Free and Go users, and is rolling them out to more regions; they appear below the answer and are labelled. OpenAI's help centre says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter its responses.
How long does it take to start getting cited? There is no published benchmark. OpenAI says robots.txt changes for search take about 24 hours to apply; after that, a new or improved page can appear once it is crawled and found. Measure against your own baseline rather than trusting a promised timeline.
Follow the citation through the conversation
A citation in the first answer is a good start, not the finish. Buyers ask for comparisons, downsides and a final pick, and the sources change at each step. Vouch follows six-question buyer conversations on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, records the sources each answer cites, and shows the stage where your brand drops out. Our methodology explains how.
