Zero-Click Search: What It Means for Brand Marketing

A zero-click search is one that ends on the results page. The searcher gets what they need from an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a knowledge panel or a map, or changes their query, and never visits a website.

It is now the norm. SparkToro, using Similarweb's clickstream panel, found that 68.01 percent of US Google searches ended without a click from January to April 2026, up from about 60 percent in 2024. SparkToro notes that the 2024 and 2026 figures come from different panels, so the trend is a comparison of apples and oranges; but every panel it has used points the same way, and its first study, in 2019, put the share at 49 percent. The data covers searches in a browser, not the Google app, so the true share is probably higher.

For brands, that is uncomfortable. You can rank well, appear in the answer, and still get no visit. The click is no longer a reliable measure of search success.

Why it matters more than the number suggests

The lost traffic is the visible half. The other half is influence. When the answer is the destination, whatever it says about your category becomes the buyer's first impression. If an AI Overview names two rivals and not you, the shortlist formed without you, and no retargeting can reach a visit that never happened.

Three consequences follow.

Rankings over-report success. Ahrefs found that, by December 2025, the presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 58 percent lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page, across 300,000 keywords. Position one is not what it was. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode covers how inclusion in those answers works.

Presence inside the answer is the new top of the funnel. Being named, described accurately and recommended in the answer is the awareness work now.

The research continues where you cannot see it. Buyers take the answer and keep asking in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini. Similarweb found ChatGPT accounted for more than 80 percent of AI referrals to the top 1,000 websites in June 2025, but referrals only count the buyers who clicked. The rest of the conversation leaves no trace in your analytics.

What still earns clicks

Zero-click does not mean no clicks. SparkToro's own advice, in the same study, is that branded searches, local businesses and high-intent transactional or tactical queries still benefit from SEO. In practice, the searches that still send visits tend to be:

  • Deep evaluation: detailed pricing, comparisons, implementation and "is it worth it" questions people do not trust to a summary.
  • Transactions and tasks: buying, booking, signing in, downloading.
  • Original data and tools: calculators, benchmarks and datasets worth visiting for themselves.
  • Local, high-intent searches: opening hours, stock, directions.

Weight your content towards these, and treat quick informational answers as a chance to be quoted rather than a source of traffic.

How brand marketing should respond

Measure visibility, not just traffic. Track how often answers mention, cite and recommend you. AI search visibility defines those metrics, and how to track brand mentions in AI search shows a free way to start.

Write to be quoted. Specific facts, statistics, named sources and clear authorship make your page the one the answer leans on, so even a zero-click answer carries your name. That is the pattern the GEO research found: statistics, quotations and named sources make content more visible in generated answers.

Own the follow-up questions. The questions after the first answer, about downsides, trust, price and which one to buy, decide the sale. Publish the pages that answer them best. Killer questions shows how to find the one that costs you most.

Spread your discovery. Email, communities, partnerships and direct traffic are insurance against an answer layer you do not control.

Common questions

Is zero-click search killing SEO? It is changing what SEO delivers, not ending it. SparkToro says SEO remains relevant but will not earn traffic the way it did. Rankings still feed the answers; what changed is that being inside the answer now matters as much as the visit after it.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews to protect my clicks? Google's AI features guide points to nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex for limiting what is shown. A page must be eligible for a snippet to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so these controls remove you from the answer as well as limiting it. For most brands, shaping how you appear beats disappearing.

How do I report zero-click impact to stakeholders? Pair traffic with answer-level visibility. Google says sites that appear in its AI features are counted in the overall Web search traffic in Search Console's Performance report, so impressions there still help. Add mention and citation tracking for the AI assistants, and the AI referral traffic in GA4 for the visits that do arrive. Clicks alone understate both the problem and the win.

See what the answer says

In a zero-click world, the answer is the brand touchpoint. Vouch shows what AI assistants say about your brand across a whole buying conversation, the question where buyers stop hearing about you, and who is recommended instead. Our methodology explains how each assistant is asked.
