Google now answers a large share of queries itself. AI Overviews, the generated summary above the results, appear on roughly 16 percent of US desktop keywords according to Ahrefs' analysis of 55.8 million of them. AI Mode goes further: a conversational interface where the list of links is optional.

For brands this is the highest-stakes surface in AI search, because it sits on top of the traffic you already have.

The click problem is real

Google says AI Overviews drive quality clicks. The independent data says otherwise. Ahrefs studied 300,000 keywords and found the presence of an AI Overview cut clicks to the top-ranking page by 34.5 percent in April 2025. Their follow-up analysis revised the hit to 58 percent. Datos and SparkToro's clickstream work shows zero-click behavior rising in parallel.

The strategic conclusion is not "SEO is over." Google still sends the large majority of search traffic, and AI Overviews cite pages that already rank. The conclusion is that being cited inside the answer is now part of winning the query, because the click you lose might be recovered as a citation, and the buyer who never clicks still forms an opinion from what the answer says.

How inclusion in AI Overviews works

AI Overviews are built from Google's index, and the cited pages skew heavily toward pages that already rank well for the query or its close variants. There is no separate "AI Overviews index" to crack. The levers:

1. Rank for the query first. Boring but true. Strong organic rankings are the main ticket in. This is one reason GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it.

2. Answer the question directly, early. Pages that state a clear, self-contained answer in the opening paragraphs get lifted. Burying the verdict under 600 words of preamble hurts you here exactly as it did in featured snippets.

3. Add the credibility signals generative engines reward. Statistics, citations and quotations are the additions the GEO research found most effective. These are the passages an AI Overview can safely quote.

4. Cover the sub-questions. AI Overviews are built to satisfy the whole intent, not one keyword. Pages that address the obvious follow-ups (cost, downsides, alternatives, how it works) give the overview more to cite and match the fan-out of related queries the system checks.

AI Mode changes the shape again

AI Mode is conversational: the user asks follow-ups and the answer keeps developing. That moves it closer to ChatGPT's dynamics than to classic search. The same six-stage buying journey applies: discovery, shortlist, objections, trust, value, decision. A brand cited in the first AI Mode answer can still lose the recommendation three questions later.

One honest limitation: AI Overviews and AI Mode answers are hard to track at scale. They are personalized, localized and volatile, and unlike the chat assistants they cannot be replayed as conversations through a public API. What you can do is track the answers as a data provider retrieves them, daily, and watch the trend rather than any single snapshot.

A working routine

  1. List your 20 most valuable queries where an AI Overview appears.
  2. Check whether you are cited, and which competitors are.
  3. For every query where a rival is cited and you are not, compare the pages: what does theirs answer that yours does not?
  4. Update your page with the direct answer, the statistic, the quotation. Recheck in two to four weeks.
