AI SEO: What It Is and How It Changes Search Optimization

By Vouch6 min read

Vouch blog cover with the title "AI SEO: What It Is and How It Changes Search Optimization" beside a line drawing of three rounded bars stacked like a list, with a curved arrow rising from below to a red dot at the end of the middle bar.

AI SEO is the umbrella term for keeping your brand visible where search is heading: answers written by AI. It covers the classic SEO foundations, plus the newer work of being mentioned, cited and recommended by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.

The term is used loosely, so it helps to pin it down. AI SEO is not a plugin, a trick or a separate kind of site. It is the recognition that more buying research now happens inside AI answers, and that being found there takes some work on top of what already works in Google. If you want the research-born name for the AI-answer part, that is generative engine optimisation; AI SEO is the broader label most marketing teams search for.

Why AI SEO is a thing now

Two shifts created it.

Google answers more queries itself. Ahrefs compared 300,000 keywords and found that, by December 2025, the presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 58 percent lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page. SparkToro, using Similarweb's clickstream panel, found that 68 percent of US Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026. More on that in zero-click search.

Assistants became a research channel. Buyers ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for a shortlist, the downsides and a recommendation before they visit any site. Similarweb counted 1.13 billion referrals from AI platforms to the top 1,000 websites in June 2025, up 357 percent on a year earlier, and those are only the buyers who clicked.

The consequence: ranking first no longer guarantees the buyer hears about you. The answer decides that.

What AI SEO covers

Most of the work falls into five areas.

1. Foundations that still matter. Google is blunt about this. Its guide to optimising for generative AI search says optimising for it "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO". Pages that are crawlable, indexed and eligible for a snippet are the ones Google's AI features can show as supporting links. ChatGPT is similar in spirit: OpenAI's help centre says a site must allow OAI-SearchBot to be eligible for ChatGPT search results. The free AI crawler checker shows which of these crawlers your robots.txt lets in.

2. Answer-friendly pages. State the claim early and plainly, with specifics: numbers, names, dates and comparisons. In the GEO study from Princeton, IIT Delhi and independent researchers, citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics improved a page's visibility in generated answers by up to 40 percent in the study's benchmark. That is a lab result, not a promise, but it points the right way.

3. Presence where assistants look. Answers are assembled from comparison articles, reviews, forums, directories and documentation as well as your own site. How Perplexity chooses sources shows how heavily one assistant leans on comparison pages. If the web's conversation about your category leaves you out, the answer will too.

4. Measurement beyond rankings. Rank trackers do not see answers. The new measures are how often assistants mention you, cite you and recommend you, and the point in a buying conversation where they stop. AI search visibility defines each one.

5. A loop, not a project. Assistants rarely give the same answer twice, and models, indexes and sources change. AI SEO is a cycle of measuring, fixing pages and measuring again.

What AI SEO is not

  • Not keyword stuffing. In the same GEO study, keyword stuffing scored below the unoptimised baseline.
  • Not a set of special files. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in its AI features. Our llms.txt guide looks at what the evidence says about that file.
  • Not a replacement for SEO. It builds on it. A page Google cannot index is rarely a page an AI answer cites. GEO vs SEO vs AEO sets out where each discipline starts and stops.

Where to start this week

  1. Ask the assistants your buyers' real questions, including the follow-ups: "what are the downsides?" and "which one should I buy?" Note where your brand appears and where it disappears.
  2. Fix the pages those follow-ups land on: comparisons, downsides, clear pricing and proof of after-sales service. Killer questions explains how to find the one that costs you most.
  3. Check your third-party presence. Are you in the comparison articles, directories and forums the assistants cite?
  4. Check the crawler doors with the AI crawler checker.
  5. Set a baseline so you can tell whether any of this worked. How to track brand mentions in AI search shows a free way to do it.

Common questions

Is AI SEO the same as GEO? Close, but not identical. GEO is the name the research gave to optimising for AI-generated answers. AI SEO is the wider industry label, which also takes in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, shopping assistants and the classic SEO underneath. In practice the work overlaps heavily, and the glossary defines both.

Does AI SEO replace traditional SEO? No. Google's own guidance treats it as SEO, and other assistants draw on search indexes too. Strong classic SEO is the entry ticket; AI SEO is the extra work that gets you named inside the answer.

How long does it take to work? There is no reliable published benchmark. Answers can change within weeks of a page or a citation changing, but treat any promised timeline with suspicion and measure against your own baseline.

Measure the answer, not just the ranking

Vouch asks the questions your buyers ask across seven assistants every day, and follows each conversation for six questions on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. It shows the stage where your brand stops being named, who is recommended instead and what to publish to win that stage back. Our methodology explains how each assistant is asked.

Vouch is invite-only for now, and every invitation starts with a 14-day free trial: join the waitlist.
